What Is An Eco Friendly Mattress?
Picking the perfect mattress that will suit your needs and fit your bedroom can take some time and effort. It can be confusing with different materials like spring, memory foam and latex. Now there’s a type of mattress classed as an eco friendly mattress.
A mattress is an investment because it can be quite expensive, so it’s best if you know all available options and really pick the right one from the beginning. Mattresses also tend to stay with you a long time, so you really need to pick right.
However, if you are environmentally conscious, you may also be concerned about how a mattress is produced and what’s in it. So in this article is for people looking for an eco friendly mattress.
When you look at the mattress options in the market today, there are those that are ‘eco-friendly’. In a time when people are becoming more aware of the dangers of the products that they use, eco-friendly products are becoming more and more popular.
It’s also good to be aware of the chemicals, toxins, and health hazards that might be contained in these products. This is why eco-friendly mattresses are worth your time.
What does eco-friendly mean?
When a mattress is tagged eco-friendly, it means it has been made using materials that are natural and good for the environment. Many are not aware that some mattresses can be a major source of exposure to harmful chemicals and even radiation.
Eco-friendly mattresses are made of non-toxic materials, so you don’t have to worry about harming your health. Some are even made of all organic materials, like organic cotton, organic wool, and even organic latex.
Eco-friendly could also pertain to the way the mattresses are made. Because of the many environmental issues that affect the world today, companies that make their product with minimum environmental impact are worth looking into.
How does an eco friendly mattress differ to a regular mattress?
It does not contain toxic flame-retardants.
Many regular mattresses are doused with chemicals (mostly flame retardants) that are highly toxic. Some of these chemicals include polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), boric acid, antimony, and eve decabromodiphenyl oxide.
Because you spend a lot of time in your bed, you should really pay attention to what its made of. Using a mattress that’s full of chemicals could eventually lead to skin irritation, diseases, respiratory problems, and other health issues like insomnia and hormonal imbalance.
When you buy eco-friendly mattresses, you can be sure that no toxic flame retardants or other equally dangerous chemicals are used.
Who Sets The Standards?
The ‘eco-friendly’ term is not a regulated claim, but there are groups that offer various certifications that manufacturers’ products have to pass to receive it.
In the case of organic latex, the ‘organic’ label has to be certified by a third party. The Control Union that certifies the latex to be organic, based on the GOLS or Global Organic Latex Standard.
When it’s an organic mattress you’re expecting it to be of a certain high standard and not full of harmful chemicals and pesticides. GOLS helps give you peace of mind with that.
In the case of memory foam, the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam, Inc. offers a label/badge called Certipur. The manufacturer’s memory foam mattress has to meet a number of stringent standards to receive certification. This includes retesting after 6 months, and an annual test thereafter for quality assurance. Otherwise the Certipur certification can be revoked.
How much is the eco friendly mattress claim justified?
In the mattress industry, terms like ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘natural’ are currently unregulated. This means that there may be some legitimate eco-friendly mattresses that really address these environmental concerns and health hazards.
But it’s also means there will be those that do not, because there is nothing to stop them making the claim. They can over-claim the ‘greenness’ of their mattresses and just ride with the trend.
This is why it’s important to really look at the credibility of the brand and pay attention to how the mattress is made. If you go for memory foam, make sure it’s not synthetic.
There are many eco friendly mattress options. My Green Mattress has a Pure Echo Organic Cotton Natural Mattress. It’s made with organic cotton and natural Joma wool from New Zealand. It’s made in the USA. It uses natural wool as a flame retardant instead of the usual chemicals. Watch a great video review below:
